Save The Best For Last

Hello and Happy belated-Valentine's Day to all... even though it's not much of a holiday at all, really. While listening to a somewhat older song by Vanessa Williams, I found myself inspired, and a half hour later, this was the result... enjoy!

Song: "Save The Best For Last" by Vanessa Williams (asterisked and italicized)
Summary: Just when she thought their chance had passed, he went and saved the best for last...

Summer days in June were always beautiful to Catherine Willows, and this one was no exception. The sun was shining brightly... not a cloud was in the sky... and it was warm, but not uncomfortably so. But, unlike every other day in June, this one held so much more meaning... evident in the snowflakes gently falling over them, landing on the tip of her nose. It had been Gil's idea. She loved snow.

*Sometimes the snow comes down in June*

Two machines, several yards away on either side of them, had been set up to shower them gently with real snow... or, finely crushed ice, really. Gil wanted to give her everything she wanted. He wanted to make her dreams come true. And here they were today, together, doing just that.

*Sometimes the sun goes 'round the moon*

Staring into those soulful blue depths, she became lost. She always had, and she always would. He held a power over her in those eyes... a power that nobody else held. He had a passion in them she'd never seen in another pair of eyes...

*I see the passion in your eyes, sometimes it's all a big surprise*

She loved him for so long... by now it seemed as if she'd loved him her whole life. For so many years she'd wished he would profess his love for her... that he would kiss her... that he would reveal anything about his feelings towards her.

*'Cause there was a time when all I did was wish you'd tell me this was love*

And now here they were. He'd professed his love, his undying love... and now he was doing it in front of everyone they cherished. Their relationship didn't go the way she'd planned. It had actually turned out more perfectly than she could've ever imagined. And today wasn't how she dreamed this day in her life would be... but it was perfect, and it was enough to make her happy for the rest of her life.

*It's not the way I hoped or how I planned, but somehow it's enough*

She smiled at him and he smiled back, the two of them standing nearly toe-to-toe as both of his hands grasped hers. She almost laughed at the crazy turn of events in her life that led to this day. She never saw it coming.

*And now we're standing face-to-face, isn't this world a crazy place*

She never thought they would've ended up in this place. After eighteen years go by, it becomes easy to lose hope. Not in their love... she knew it was there... but in their chances. She could've sworn their chance had flown by ages ago.

*Just when I thought our chance had passed*

But here they were, about to take a leap together, and she knew he'd never let her fall. Her heart sang of their destiny... of just how meant for each other they really were, and it was then she realized that whatever higher being controlled her life had wanted to save the best for last.

*You go and save the best for last*

What seemed like only moments ago, she'd seen her dream far in the distance... and had approached it with a slowed pace. Her mind had screamed to run... to catch up to the dream and snatch it before it got away. But she knew that would never have happened. He was HER dream, hers alone... and she knew he didn't want to get away.

*All of the nights you came to me*

She recalled how they took their first leap. It had been an ordinary evening in any other circumstances other than the fact that Gil had been hurt. His heart had been broken by a woman he had cared for.

*Some silly girl had set you free*

Catherine had rushed to his side, her heart aching both for him and for the fact that he had been attempting to start a romance with a woman that was most definitely not her. He'd looked so sad... and for someone who worked feverishly to conceal his emotions, that was something quite out of character. He'd claimed to be a failure, wondering when he would ever have another chance at love.

*You wondered how you'd make it through*

Catherine, for the most part, had desperately tried to assure him that he wasn't a failure, in any sense of the word. And that he would have plenty of chances at love... if he looked in the right places. Part of her had wanted to scream at him, however, for thinking that something would work between him and another woman. That woman wasn't her, so there wasn't even a chance for them. Didn't he see it?

*I wondered what was wrong with you*

She knew he'd seen it... the chemistry between them. She felt in her heart that ultimately, they would end up together... that their love was mutual. So why was he wasting his time with someone else? She knew his heart belonged to her.

*'Cause how could you give your love to someone else and share your dreams with me*

And after she'd made a comment about looking in the right place, they'd exchanged a look. Then this... expression... had come over his face. Looking back now, she didn't quite know how to describe it. It was a mixture of shock, nervousness, love, and... above everything else, realization. As if a very important piece of evidence had been overlooked.

*Sometimes it's everything you're looking for that's the one thing you can't see*

And as they stood here together, staring into one another's eyes, they saw what was right in front of them the whole time... each other. Catherine almost wished they'd done this sooner... but at the same time knew that if she could go back and do it again, she wouldn't have it happen any other way.

*But now we're standing face-to-face, isn't this world a crazy place*

A voice foreign to the both of them drew their attentions away from each other. "Gil? Do you take Catherine to be your lawfully wedded wife, in sickness and in health, 'til death do you part?"

He turned back to Catherine and gave her a brilliant smile... "I do."

She smiled back, tears in her eyes.

*Just when I thought our chance had passed*

"And Catherine? Do you take Gil to be your lawfully wedded husband, in sickness and in health, 'til death do you part?"

She turned her tearful smile back to Gil, struggling to get out the two simplest, yet most important words she would ever say... "I do."

*You go and save the best for last*

When he jokingly sighed in relief and chuckled, she too began to laugh... along with the small crowd watching them. She gazed lovingly at the man in front of her, marvelling at the fact that everything she could ever need had been encompassed in him the entire time. Her thoughts were interrupted once more... "Do you have the rings?"

*Sometimes everything you're looking for is the one thing you can't see*

Gil answered the minister in the affirmative and turned to Jim Brass, standing alongside him as his best man, to retrieve the rings, handing his to Catherine while he held her shimmering band in his own. He then slipped the ring slowly onto her finger, as instructed by the minister, and repeated the most beautiful statement to ever reach her ears... "With this ring, I thee wed." He then bent to kiss the shimmering diamond ring, glancing up at her through his lashes as he smiled, the beautiful crystal snow falling on them a little heavier now...

*Sometimes the snow comes down in June, sometimes the sun goes 'round the moon*

Catherine then repeated this gesture with him, choking up as she whispered, "With this ring, I thee wed." She then slipped the brilliant gold band onto his finger, her fingertips caressing his hand lightly while she smiled at him. And to think she had just assumed they'd missed their chance. He had only been saving the best for last.

*Just when I thought our chance had passed, you go and save the best for last*

"By the powers vested in me by the state of Nevada, I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss the bride."

Then, with dazzling smiles on both their faces, they gathered each other close and leaned in to share the first kiss of the rest of their lives....

*You went and saved the best for last...*

THE END
