Chapter 1

It was Catherine's very first lecture at UNLV. It was quite an honor to lecture students at the school she attended.

After her lecture on blood splatter analysis and it's uses in crime scene investigation, that went quite well…she decided to take they long way back to her Denali, across campus. It was a long and leisurely stroll down the paved walkways. It was a beautiful evening, and she was glad to be outside enjoying it, not stuck in the lab.

It was just starting to get dark when she neared the area where about one year ago she and her co-workers were processing a crime scene. The crime scene of a serial killer that struck on the eve of his copy-cat's execution. As she neared the railing that the killer used to lure his victims, she felt a chill and tightened her jacket around her slim figure.

She continued to walk, being extra careful of her surroundings, especially since she was the only one walking. She reached the blue handrail and out of curiosity she decided to see if the paint was still `wet.' She touched her manicured finger to the metal and found that it was still wet. "That's strange." She thought. She shrugged it off an kept walking. She did not backtrack to wash the paint and oil combination from her finger.

She was kinda creeped out and began to walk faster to her Denali. Once her SUV came into her vision she felt a little better. She considered bolting for it, but decided to keep her cool and walk to the car. Her mind was just working overtime, she was perfectly safe.

From behind her someone cupped their gloved hand over her mouth and led her to the darkened area by the drinking fountain. Her eyes were wide open as she tried to gather information about her attacker. Once there he smacked her head into the cement of the drinking fountain.

Her heart and stomach as she felt the cement slice her forehead, she was scared for her life. She knew first hand what this creature was capable of…murder, suffering, rape.

Suddenly out of now where she fought back, she decided she would not let this sick human take her away from her daughter. She would not leave her daughter an orphan without a damned good fight. She would catch this guy, if it was the last thing she did.

She kneed him where it hurt as he tried to unzip her pants. He doubled over in pain, giving her a few seconds to pull out her gun.

Successfully, the gun was cocked and aimed at him when he looked into her determined blue eyes. She studied him, trying to brand into her memory everything she could about him, as they had no clue who he was. Her face showed a look of disgust for him and a determination to let him know he had not won this battle.

He noticed that she had gotten a good look at his figure, and he knew if he attempted to pull his gun, she'd shoot him first. He had watched her for many years now. He knew everything about her, well professionally anyway. He knew she would not hesitate to kill him. He wanted to be the one to kill her, not the other way around. With that he snared at her, "I'll be back Miss Willows…and this time you may not be so lucky." And then he bolted through the brush.

Catherine stood her ground for a moment or so to make sure he was really gone. Then she breathed a sigh of relief and immediately dialed Gil's cell phone.

"Hey, Cat. How did your lecture go."

Silence

"Cath…"

He heard Catherine begin to sob.

"Cath, what is it. Are you okay? Talk to me?"

"I…I…Remember John Mathers….and how we never caught the real killer…" she chocked out.

"Yeah." He followed

"Well, he's back. He just tried to kill me…" she sobbed
