Chapter 1

Grissom watched Lady Heather's place from his car. It pained him to know his work had once again gotten in the way of what could've been a great source of joy for him. His thoughts were interrupted by the shrill ringing of his cell phone. He considered ignoring it, not particularly in the mood to race back to the lab for extra hours. However, something in his gut told him to pick up and he was glad he did when he realized who was on the other end, "Lindsey? What's wrong?" He sat up in the seat when he heard the little girl's voice, "Are you ok?"

"Yeah, I'm ok, Uncle Gil. But mommy's crying."

She said nothing more and she didn't have to. Grissom started his car immediately, "I'm coming right now, Lindsey. When you hear the doorbell, check carefully to see if it's me before you open the door, ok?"

"Ok." There was a click, indicating the call had ended.

Grissom sped away, thoughts of Lady Heather long gone and replaced by worries of Catherine. When he arrived, he was surprised to find Catherine, not Lindsey, opening the door for him.

Catherine frowned, obviously unaware of Lindsey's earlier call to him, "What are you doing here?"

No matter how hard she tried to act like she was fine, he knew her better than that. Besides, the redness in her eyes gave her true emotions away. She had been crying, like Lindsey had told him. "Lindsey called me." The expression on her face meant she knew there was no point in pretending she was ok anymore. Lindsey had told him. He watched as she backed away from the door, slowly retreating into the house. He stepped inside and closed the door, following her path to find her seated silently in the living room, "Catherine..." He began.

"I don't want you to pity me, Gil." She said, avoiding looking at him.

"That's not what I came to do." This made her look at him but she said nothing. "Sara told me about the case. She told me about how upset you got." He slowly made his way to the couch and took the seat beside her.

She looked down at her hands and nodded, "I guess I owe her an apology, huh?" She paused but didn't give him a chance to answer, "I know she did her best, I just..." She trailed off.

"It's hard." He said understandingly, not taking his eyes away from her.

Exhaling loudly, she looked up at nothing in particular, "I saw him...just an hour before Lindsey called me...we got into a fight..." She shook her head with guilt. "And now he's gone."

"I'm sorry, Catherine." He didn't know what else he could say. He watched her carefully, wishing she would look at him.

"I hated him for what he did to me. I hated him for shattering all the dreams I had. But he gave me Lindsey. He will always be her father and..." Her voice cracked and she had to close her eyes to stop the tears from flowing. She was tired of crying. She didn't want to anymore.

"Cath..." Grissom gently brought his hand to her shoulder, not sure if she wanted him to comfort her. But his touch was all it took for her to break down. The tears ran down her cheeks as she found her way into his arms. His heart sank as she cried into his shirt and he tightened his arms around her, realizing that was all he was able to do for her now.
