"Linds, do you want pancakes or cereal?"

"..."

"Linds, honey?"

"Uncle Jon, I'm watching the baby."

"Linds, she's upstairs."

"I know. I'm listening to her breathe, I'm helping."

"I know sweetie. Now, pancakes or cereal?"

"Gil lets me have both."

I'll bet he does. These women have that man wound round their little finger, there is no way I'd ever run after them like he does...

"So can I have both, Uncle Jon?"

"Course you can sweetie."

"And juice?"

"Sure."

Nope, I'm not here to simply answer to their every whim.

"And coffee?"

"No."

"But it's a special day."

"I know, honey, but if your mom finds out I'd let you have coffee I wouldn't live long enough to enjoy a special day ever again. So drink your juice."

Goodness, I'd make a good mom. But that's a story for another day, today we are talking about Allison. And you know what, she's probably all we'll be talking about in this house for the next sixteen years or so. Did you see what I did there, I spoke about what happens in this house as though I would be involved with them in the future. But it was not an error, I plan on being around then. They're all just too cute to stay away from, and I'm kinda cute too... So they'll keep me around for that. But this isn't a story about me, though if it was... Well, it'd be good, I have lots of stories.

But this is about Allison, right? And it should be, the beautiful girl who was born yesterday, deserves all the attention she'll receive. I love her already, isn't that strange? I mean we only met yesterday, if this was an adult we were talking about I wouldn't be in love so soon - well maybe if it were Joshua Jackson... But I love her. Allison. I love her. And I'm not the only one in love with her, this young girl opposite me has fallen too. She is sitting opposite me now, her little body set to attention, prepared to abandon her breakfast if her little sister needs anything. She used the words "my little sister" more times in the last hour than I have ever heard in my life, I think she's gonna be good at this. I could have used a sister like her. Did you see what I did again? I turned it back round to me, how self obsessed could one man be? It should be Lindsey who is jealous of the new baby, not crazy Uncle Jon...

And I'm not jealous, but all this joy and new baby smell in the house makes me yearn for what never can be mine. Boy, again with the obsessing about me, I should get back to being Caths' slave. That is my actual title, Cath decided on it for me three months ago. She's called me worse things in her life, she wanted to call me worse than that now - but Gil intervened, my great protector! But I like being Caths' slave, it means I get to be here this morning. It means I get to be in the house when they bring home their baby daughter, and it means I get to take care of Lindsey when the new parents are upstairs trying to sleep for a few minutes. It means I get to be part of their family, and it's like every birthday come true.

So I should get back to what I was doing , and go disturb the happy parents so I get closer to enjoying some more baby snuggles. See that's my plan, the nicer I am to mom and dad, the more baby snuggles I get. It worked with Cath the first time, Linds was the most beautiful baby I had ever seen - just like her sister is now. I'm gonna be such a cool uncle, taking the girls to concerts, clothes shopping. Maybe that's a little bit in the future, although babies need clothes too, and no daughter of Caths' would ever turn her nose up at a shopping invite. Did I tell you about her nose, Allison I mean? It's the cutest little button nose, I just want to go to her room and kiss that sweet little face of hers. But before I get to do that again, I have to make nice with the parents.

So I leave my sweet Lindsey in the kitchen, focusing equal parts attention on her cereal and her baby monitor. I have juice, and good wishes, so am going to take care of the parents. See I can say that, I'm going to take care of them, and it sounds good. It sounds like the truth. But what I'm really doing is going for a sneaky peak at the happy couple. What, is that really so wrong? Okay, I know it is, and I hate to use the word cute again - but they are. They're my ideal couple, even more than Brad and Jennifer. Seriously, such is my devotion to them, I've grown to believe that Gil is more gorgeous than Brad... So I like to keep my eye on my favourite twosome. Especially now, with all this hormonal happiness enveloping the house. Yesterday when they brought Allison home I thought they were going to burst from the joy of it, so I like being now to steal a little of the happiness. Okay, okay, and sneak a peak at Gil.

So are they sleeping? Should I burst in on them? I know they just lay down a couple of hours ago, but the new young lady of the house will probably be up soon. I think I should burst in, or maybe lurk for a little while. Or eavesdrop for a while like I usually do, but you didn't hear me say that. Let's just listen for a bit.

"She does, doesn't she?"

"Of course."

"I didn't think I would notice so much."

"Gil, honey, you're her dad. Of course she looks like you. She's beautiful."

"I know. When we put her down to sleep I didn't want to leave her. I want to wake her up."

"She'll be up in a few minutes, if she's anything like her sister. Stay here a few more minutes, please."

Okay, is it getting interesting in there? And is it wrong that I'm asking that question?

"She has your eyes Gil."

"I know."

Oh, listen to this, couldn't you just crawl in there and hug them. Actually no you shouldn't do that, doing that almost got me into trouble once. Or twice. Another time...

"She has your nose, Cath. She's beautiful. Cath?"

"Yes, sweetie?"

"I love you."

Okay, I can hear the rustling of sheets and what sounds like fabric been removed. God, I hope that's not clothes coming off. I'm too young and innocent to see a man and a woman together like that.

"Jon?"

Busted. Man, how does she do that? She's grappling with her gorgeous husband, and she senses me? Must be because her mom radar is on high alert.

"Morning."

"Are you lurking?"

I love the way Cath gets staight to the point and thinks the worst of me. She knows me too well.

"Little bit. Morning Gil."

"Jon. So why are you lurking?"

And that husband of hers seems to know me rather well too. That's the last thing I need, Cath I can handle, but a tag team? Actually that was a lie, the man hasn't been born who can 'handle' Cath.

"I'm good at it."

"Well that's good to know. And the other reason being?"

Why does he have to be an investigator all the time, leaves so little room for surprises.

"I have juice and bagels."

"I love you Jon. Get in here."

Now was that Gil or Cath? I'm going to let you guess.

They are on top of the covers, fully clothed, only half awake. I'm sure they'll be like that a lot over the next few months. Cath looks beautiful and tired, and Gil looks beautiful and tired. But they look happy, that crazy happy look they've had since they first got together. I deposit their breakfast and move to leave, but am stopped by the touch of Catherines hand on mine.

"Thanks, honey."

I don't think I've ever seen her look this happy, content. There might be tears, and I'll lose cool points for that. And a man just has to hold on to his cool vibe. Wait a minute, if a man uses the phrase 'cool vibe' then he's pretty much lost touch with ever being cool. But I digress...

"You're welcome."

"Is Lindsey up and about yet?"

That's my Mr Grissom, the concerned dad.

"She is. Eating breakfast and desperate to see her sister."

"I love you for doing all this."

And that's my Mrs Grissom, the concerned friend.

"I know. I'll leave you to get up, I have Linds to check on."

"Jon, before you go..."

"I'm not running you a bath, Catherine, that's what you've got a husband for."

"Funny man. We wanted to ask you something."

"I know I hang about too much, I'll go when you're up. I promise."

Gil is looking at me with that perplexed face that he does so well.

"Jon, yesterday was the most important day of my life. You helped so much, you always help so much. So we thought maybe you'd like to..."

Okay and now he's talking in sentences I don't understand... Which isn't that unusual, but he's tends to talk about spiders when he confuses me in a normal conversation. Did I miss him saying 'spiders', sometimes a man has to tune out for his own sanity. Time to get out of here.

"Go home, yes I will. I promise."

"Will you be Allisons' godfather?"

Okay I hear the word 'godfather', and I think of Marlon Brando... They're not talking about a movie, are they? Focus on the words Jon, focus on the words.

Oh.

"Really?"

I love it when Cath smiles, and this one is world class in it's brilliance. I know her answer before she says the words.

"Of course."

"Your daughter is beautiful, both of them are."

I could add, that they look like their parents, but Gil hates it when I compliment him. Cath's like me, and loves to hear words of how fabulous she is, but it's Allisons' day. The words can wait.

"I can't believe she's ours Jon. It feels like life began again yesterday and everything is new and wonderful again."

"Catherine, you say that every time you talk about your husband there."

I like this so much, teasing them like this. Makes me feel like part of the family, they always make me feel like part of the family.

"Hey, I'm sitting right here."

Oops, shouldn't forget about the head of the family right there. He's awfully good natured, letting me into his bedroom to gossip with his wife.

"Gil, the woman talks about you all the time, I would say she's a fan."

"Good to know."

"So, whenever you're ready Gil."

I have to move this along or I'll never get to the champagne this morning.

"What?"

"We need to leave the women to the womanly chores, and we need to go be men."

"I'm scared to ask, but, what?"

"We need to go and drink ,and smoke cigars, and boast about your beautiful child. It's what men do."

"All men, really?"

Shut up, Cath. I want champagne. I'm a godfather, I need to toast the birth of another god daughter. Did I mention I wanted champagne?

"I read it in a magazine."

I think.

"You did not, someone did it in a soap, so you think you should too."

You know what, I think it was on television. But I think it was a reality show, so it must be true.

"Pretty much."

She's so not going for it, and she is the boss. Maybe she has a point, I shouldn't really be drunk in charge of a god daughter. Not again.

"Okay, enough. We'll be out in a minute, and we will celebrate the birth of our daughter. We will celebrate in the way that we hold her, the way we kiss her, sing to her, and love her. That's how we will celebrate her birth, and her life. We'll love her."

And there isn't a whole lot else I can add to that. I can't let you touch and taste the palpable love in this home right now, but it's here, and it's real. And it's all the celebration Allison will ever need.

That and expensive shoes. But I'll be there for that too.

The end, for now...
