| Chapter 1 | ||
He stares at the phone again, willing it to ring. He knows this is wrong, that he'll regret it, but he also knows that as soon as she asks he'll go. It's killing him slowly by inches but he can't resist. He loves her but to her it's just sex. It's the same every day, when shift ends he heads home and waits to see if she'll call. To see if she wants him today or not. Sometimes she calls every day, if she's not seeing someone, if she's desperate. Sometimes it's just once or twice a week, but still he always goes to her whenever or wherever she commands. And the sad thing is, she knows he will. I've been a rock, and I've got my fences She thinks its just sex for him too, doesn't realise how much she's hurting him and it would probably kill her if she did, so he won't tell her. Just hope that one of these times maybe she'll find she loves him too. But he's not counting on it. Not any longer, for down that road just lies a whole world of pain. Who's he kidding he's in pain any way but then maybe he's just a glutton for punishment where she's concerned? The phone rings and he jumps, listens to his answer machine picking up, if it's anyone else he doesn't want to know. Then he hears her voice. "You've got ten seconds to answer this or I'm going to bed alone," she tells him. It's part of their game, she's not serious but he's not prepared to take the chance. He dives for the phone, frightened she'll hang up before he gets there and he'll miss his opportunity to be with her today, "I'm here, I'm here," he hates how he sounds. So desperate, so needy, how could she love someone like that? "My place, now!" and she hangs up. He's out the door and into his car in less than five minutes. He knows the road blindfold and he gets there in record time. She opens the door wearing nothing but a robe. There's no talk, no foreplay, it's just sex. And when it's done they fall asleep, not in one another's arms, snuggling like lovers, but side-by-side coated in sweat and exhausted. Before he succumbs to sleep he sets an alarm, he knows his place. He has to be out of here before her daughter arrives. Lindsey can no nothing of this, it's part of the deal and Gil Grissom knows how to follow orders. He leaves swearing he'll never do it again, but he knows it's a lie. He'll do anything just to spend some time alone with Catherine, and in her bed. Maybe one day a miracle will happen and she'll finally come to love him, but until then he'll take what he can. | ||
