| Chapter 1 | ||
Grissom did not know what to think this time as he watched his wife's disappointment as she discovered that she was not pregnant. They had been trying for almost two years now, ever since they were married, but with no success. Grissom did not really mind if they did not have a child together. He firmly believed if they were lucky enough to be blessed with children, then all the better. If they were not meant to have any children, that was fine with him too. As long as they were happy together, Grissom did not really care one way or another. Besides, they had her daughter, whom he had watched growing up and loved as his own. They were not young, so the chances of her getting pregnant were relatively small. His wife had been hoping fervently for a child. So much so that it was starting to be an obsession. Making love was more of a chore rather than a pleasure these days, or so it seemed to Grissom. Intimacy was planned around fertile periods rather than spontaneous most of the time. Grissom still loved his wife, there was no doubt about that, but the passion was diminishing and the closeness they had once shared seemed to have diminished under the strain. Instead, they were starting to act like an old married couple that had been together for decades, whereas in reality they should have still been in the honeymoon stage. To the outside world, they were the perfect suburban American family, but behind closed doors, all was not as it seemed to be. He felt that they were digressing, moving backwards in their relationship. They were now more like the good friends they were before they got married. Close in some ways, yet distant in others. He did not know how to fix things. He had never been good at handling personal relationships. He had only been able to get her to marry him after more than two decades of friendship, though he had loved her for more than half of that time. And to top it off, she had been the one to make the first move in their relationship. He knew that she felt useless, angry at herself for not being able to give him the child that she thought was so important to him. She was determined to try until she succeeded, and his advice to take things as they were had not been heeded. After every month that she was not pregnant, she seemed to get more and more determined. She made special foods, try different positions, and would have dragged him to a fertility specialist if he had not put his foot down. He had as much as he could take. He hated seeing her like this, defeated. This time, he decided that he would take matters into his own hands before everything blew up in their faces.
