She lay fully on top of him as they basked in the afterglow. Her head was resting on his chest and her fingers trailed slowly and lovingly up and down his arm. He stroked her reddish-blonde hair as their bodies calmed. Their hearts beat in unison and in a few moments, returned to a normal pace once again. "Do you think we made a baby?" Gil asked softly placing a kiss on her temple. She giggled. "Gil, these things can't be planned or rushed. I hope we did, but my answer is we'll know in about 6 weeks," Catherine said. "We're not spring chickens and it may not happen, my dear. We should really prepare ourselves for that. AND, if it does, there are thousands of things that could go wrong..." "There you go again, expecting the worst," he said, a chuckle in his tenor voice. She lifted her head and her blue-green eyes met his blue eyes. "This is going to happen for us. We deserve it." ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ For the second week in a row, she'd been feeling tired and hungry. She recognized it as the way she felt when she learned she was pregnant with Lindsey. That was a whole different situation and seemed a lifetime ago. She told Gil and scheduled a doctors appointment for the next day. He was neck deep in a case, one he did not trust Nick, Warrick or anyone else to take over, so he sadly bid her goodbye and said "Good luck." Those words meant the world to both of them. She returned that afternoon with tears in her eyes and great news. That night, as they ate dinner with Lindsey, they told her. She was overjoyed and asked to babysit and if she had to give up her room. The said yes to babysitting and explained that for the first few months, the child would stay in their room. They would go from there. ************************************************************************************** They decided they had to tell everyone since it would be very obvious in a few months anyway. Greg Sanders insisted on throwing them a party to celebrate their marriage AND the baby all in one. He decorated the break room with streamers, baby booties and had an elaborate wedding cake. Nick Stokes got them a one night stay at The Fez hotel and included a quarter in the lovely card- a heartfelt, inside joke that made them laugh. Warrick hugged Catherine tightly and shook Gil's hand. He offered to do whatever he could to help them out. Jim Brass, Al Robbins, Jackie, Archie Cho and even Judy Tremore passed along blessings and attended the little party. Only one person felt left out and was by no means happy about the labs festivities. Sara Sidle had been hoping against hope that Gil would one day return her feelings. He had feelings for her, just not the kind she wanted him to have. His eyes met Sara's during the party and they lingered. He hated that he caused someone he cared for so much pain, but he loved Catherine and she was his life- she, Lindsey and now their child. Sara would move on and be OK. They exchanged smiles. &&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&& Midway through her third month, they were sitting in Gil's office, looking over some paperwork and munching on sandwiches. He became alarmed when he watched her pause and sit very still. He moved from behind his desk to settle beside her on the sofa that sat against the back wall. Her eyes misted over. "You OK? What is it?" She said nothing, but grabbed his hand. She placed it on her slightly swollen tummy, rested her own hand on top of his, and looked up. Their eyes met. She watched him searching her soul, an amused and slightly nervous look in his eyes. He took a sharp, deep breath and got perfectly still. His eyes widened. She smiled brightly. A tiny... hand, judging by the location... pressed against his own hand once again. The baby was now big enough to feel movement. "Meet our child, Gil," she said tenderly, reaching her free hand up to caress his cheek and stoke the beard she had come to love. Tears began to glisten in his eyes and he gasped at each flutter he felt inside her. Catherine was a miracle, but this was truly beyond his comprehension. He was going to be a father! Sure he was much older than most first time fathers, and he loved Lindsey as his own, but this was different. This time, Catherine could enjoy being pregnant and savor everything. She missed out on so much while carrying Lindsey. They leaned their foreheads together and cried. Their happiness had been a long time coming. ************************************************************************************** "What can I do?" he asked, his voice shaky. She leaned her head back against the stark white pillow and chuckled. "PLEASE sit still so I can focus on your eyes and squeeze your hand, that's all I need," she said with a smile. He obeyed, returning her smile. In another hour, with one last push, a healthy cry filled their ears and they knew their life was complete. They had a son. Michael Grissom. | ||
