Chapter 1 One hand went around her wrist; the other slapped her across the face. She could feel how it stung, how he didn't seem to become tired of hitting her, over and over again. She pressed her lips together, to endure the pain, then she took a deep breath and looked into his eyes. What she saw made the blood in her veins turn to ice. Never before had she seen such pure malice on anyone’s face. Not even Eddie had looked at her with such hatred; she began to wonder what she had done to deserve this kind of treatment. Chapter 2 "What have I done?" she asked; another slap across the face. She began to feel an urge to vomit, as she felt the, by now familiar, metallic taste in the back of her mouth. He had managed to make her bleed, and the sad part was that it wasn't the first time. But she just couldn't make herself leave him. She had fought to be together with him; so how could she justify leaving him. If she did all her heartache would’ve been for nothing. "What have I done?" she once again asked, she got the same response as before. Chapter 3 She would look like hell in the morning, some well-applied make-up would hide the worst bruises. But she didn’t know how to hide the look of fear in her eyes. Suddenly he stopped; she breathed a sigh of relief, only to choke on it, as she lost her breath. Panic began to course through her veins, as she tried to grasp what had happened. As she saw the blood under her she knew, he had kicked her in the stomach. "Ok, be mad at me. I don't care. But... how could you hurt the baby?" she asked, through her sobs. Chapter 4 "How could you hurt our baby?" she asked; repeating it she wiped at the blood on the carpet. "Our baby? I know whose baby it is. Don't lie to me, Catherine," he responded callously. "How can you say that? It’s our baby... was our baby," she responded, and began drawing patterns in the blood. She could feel him watching, his gaze was like that of a predator, and she couldn't help but wonder when he would deal her the deathblow. Feeling certain that this was the moment when it would all end, she closed her eyes and awaited her penalty. Chapter 5 The blow never came. Instead she heard somebody cry; surprised, she opened her eyes, and saw it was her husband. "Shh, it's okay," she said, gently cradling the man, who had fallen down to his knees beside the pool of blood. "I... I'm... I'm so sorry, Catherine. I didn't mean to hurt you... you know I would never hurt you on purpose, don't you Catherine?" he said, as he continued crying. "I know, honey. I know. Don't worry, I forgive you," she said, like so many nights before. "Please Catherine, don't leave me. I can't live without you," he pleaded. Chapter 6 "I'll never leave you. Through sickness and health, through pain and pleasure, until death do us part. I will never break my promise," she comforted; rocking him back and forth, forgoing her own pain to soothe his. She sat there thinking about life and its ironies. How was it that both of her husbands had been taken from her by the same evil seductress? How was it that both Eddie and Gil had become slaves under liquor? She didn’t know all she knew was that one day he would kill her, but despite that she would never break her promise. THE END |
