Grissom abruptly leaves a dinner honoring Conrad Ecklie's (Marc Vann) appointment to new Assistant Director of the Crime Lab after he gets an urgent page to rush across the street to a hotel suite where a high school student was found dead. Dayshift CSI Sofia Curtis (Lombard) assists Grissom with the case. The autopsy reveals that the victim died of suffocation after one of her classmates was kidnapped from the party. The CSI team now races to find the kidnapped victim before she is found dead, too.

Rory Atwater: "... greatly appreciated at the time. But what I think A.D. Cavallo will enjoy the most, is no longer having to lie about how much work he has to do. Enjoy your retirement, Bob. But, eh... seriously folks, appointing the new assistant director to the crime lab is not a task I take lightly. I believe in promoting from within, I believe in rewarding years of dedication and devotion to this department. I believe in Conrad Ecklie."

Gil's beeper goes off and he checks it while Rory continues his speech.

Atwater: "For a proper introduction, I'd like to turn to his good friend and colleague of many years, supervisor Gil Grissom."

Catherine: "Gil?"

Catherine: "Don't even think about it."

Gil: "Swing's taped out. I'm the back-up. Here. You give my speech. Good luck, Conrad."

He stands up and points to his beeper, mouthing words to the stage and walking out of the room.

Atwater: "Gil. What's going on? Help me out up here..."

Catherine opens the napkin Gil handed her and reads the words. She stands and heads for the stage.

Gil's phone rings while he is talking to Gavin/Rex and he answers it.

Gil: "Grissom."

Catherine: "I just found Janelle Macklin."

Gil: "Good. We need to talk to her right away."

Catherine: "That's going to be tough."

Gil: "Definitely not synthetic. Medulla is 14 microns in diameter. Continuous cortex. Imbricate scales. I'm thinking sheep. Merino. Fine wool for fine fabrics."

Catherine: "Why are you talking to yourself?"

Gil: "I'm trying a new technique."

Catherine: "Is it working?"

Gil: "I have no idea."

The machine beeps and Gil pulls out the paper.

Gil: "Aniline dye. Most likely BASF or Dupont. Probably used by every high-end garment maker in the world."

Catherine: "And black wool is, uh, definitely not used for party dresses so it's got to be from those Tuxedo boys in the suite."

Gil: "You'll have to take their clothes."

Catherine: "And since the surveillance feed was still being time shifted at that point, my guess is that Janelle to the service elevator out."

Sofia: "So, where does that leave us?"

Gil: "I think were done."

Catherine: "No actual crime was committed. The kidnapping wasn't real..."

Sofia: "Nicole Jensen's death was plenty real. Janelle Macklin is ultimately responsible for putting into motion the events that lead to Nicole's death."

Gil: "Well, the broadcast's out on Janelle and her car. When she turnss up she'll have to answer for it."

Sofia: "Well that's... highly unsatisfying. You forgot this at the suite. I fixed it for you. You never know when you might need to get dressed up again."

Catherine: "She glued it. Just keep in mind, Gil. That she is on Ecklie's team."
