Fingerprints

There are four basic groups of fingerprint friction ridge patterns that uniquely identify every individual:

  • Loops: stringly curved patterns, the ends of which enter and exit the finger on the same side (60% of all fingerprints)
  • Whorls: complete oval(30% of all fingerprints)
  • Arches: ridges run across the finger, arching in the middle (5% of all fingerprints)
  • Accidental: combination of two of the above patterns (5% of all fingerprints)
